i appreciate good, smart, interesting-looking advertising. i just don't want my work to ever be mistaken for such. when  i see a work of visual art that looks like there should be some sort of logo somewhere on it, it leaves me rather blah.

if this aversion leads me to make work that's a little gritty for a lot of people's tastes, i'm ok with that. i think it would be a loss for us if we allow our expectations of what art can be to become so accustomed to the established aesthetics of graphic design, that we forget what raw really means or looks like.

a 4000 gallon cylindrical aquarium [containing a light, somewhat transparent automotive engine oil] sits in a vacant space. the artist breaks 3600 eggs, one by one, and places each into the aquarium so as not to break the yolk. the aquarium is sealed. the shells are washed, and left on the floor surrounding the aquarium. the temperature of the contents of the aquarium is raised by one degree farenheit each day for 30 days. on the 31st day, the temperature of the contents of the aquarium is briefly raised by an additional 98 degrees farenheit. the entire process is video documented.

an ample white space, with all entrances covered by white cloth so as to ensure that all viewers, once having entered the space are presented with a consistent white background;

the floor is sky blue;

in the center of the space there is a white podium, upon which sits a computer (also white); this computer is used to play and control a series of musical compositions written for rather slow, softly-paced quadrilles; (may possibly be substituted by minuets or waltzes)

actors consist of 8 subjects, divided into 4 couples; they are nude, though this fact is somewhat obfuscated by their being entirely covered in white body/face paint from head to toe;

the subjects dance (quadrilles, minuets, or waltzes) to the series of musical compositions, occasionally pausing and sitting in white chairs, stationed on the edges of the space; next to the chairs are small white tables, upon which sits one glass for each of the subjects, and large pitchers filled with fresh orange juice; the subjects rest and drink, and talk, then recommence to dance;

all of the subjects are attached to an IV drip, of whole blood, which is carried on the typical pole stand on casters, which they must manage as they dance;

[artist's note: the only question is the hair color of each subject, that is, whether it's also white, or remains natural]

the walls are blank except for a pair or scissors hanging from a long piece of thin chain, and a sign that reads:
"Thank you for attending. This exhibit is made entirely of the remnants of each visitor. Please use the scissors to remove some very small portion of your clothing or hair, (please no larger than 1 inch by 1 inch) and deposit the donation into the tub. Thanks for your participation."

the contents of the tub are removed and sent to a laboratory to be tested.

a list of all contents, including materials, trace elements, germs, etc, found by the lab are printed or written onto the walls of the space.

behind each of the players stands a person dressed as an executive,
wearing a "hello, my name is" tag.
each tag contains the name of a large international bank, or industrial sector.

outside the glass house,
a group of 792 people stand, partially or completely unclothed.

the weather is likely very cold and inclimate.

priests walk through the crowd, offering paper towels for the 792 to cover themselves against the cold.

the game ends when the last of the 792 walks away.

4, 5, 6 people wander out into a windy chill to smoke.
one by one they arrive on the landing.
one by one they retrieve a cigarette and light.
one, instead, pulls out a packet of tobacco and rolls a cigarette by hand.
each smokes, together, in silence.
one by one, each finishes and leaves the landing to re-enter the theater.
the one who rolled the tobacco is the last to finish.
alone, he moves from a corner, taking one short step to look over at the small courtyard below.
he sees a dozen or so plastic chairs,
and a few scores of leaves on the ground.
the leaves are crimson.
the chairs are burgundy.
one by one, several leaves are blown away across the courtyard.

the last smoker leaves the terrace and re-enters the theater.

the terrace is again empty.

every day beginning at 9 am, an artist plants 196 tree seedlings in soil containers that cover the floor of a "white space".

after lunch time, they are watered and tended to.

after dinner time, they are uprooted, placed in a pile in the center of the space, and burned.

the nightly fires are repeated until significant smoke stains are achieved on the walls.

the stains are photographed, and printed in large format.

the photographs are burned.

this entire process is documented in video, with the footage placed on a dedicated website that will remain unedited, possibly, eventually, going dormant. or perhaps not.

90% of art is eye candy.
7%, head candy.
here's to the attempt to concoct recipes worthy
in their alchemy to be included in the illustrated
cookbook of the 3% that manages to satiate both.

it must be said that some of my attempts have been a little undercooked perhaps, like coming down too soon, like weak mushrooms wearing off at 2am in the all-night donut shop, with sugar cake, watching the easy white trails of cream glide and tentacle, shifting between transparency and opacity in the dense black universe of the bottomless cup.
some, overcooked, like a solid week spent driving much much too fast and too far, on bad bathtub blotter, just to feel the constant blast of tepid wind coming through the wide open windows, and drinking only water. discerning purity and impurities. glorious, banal, water.
some were like peasant dishes, too easy on the palate, and lending too much to overconsumption. some got out of hand, over-complicated, making the all-too-common error of cannibalizing their own flavors.

and yet, here's to the hunger, the eternal ravenous search, for those rare blends: that gratify like comfort food or familiar sex, but that also tantalize and edify like interrogating a tradition, contaminating or lacing a familiar beverage, or re-learning mere sustenance.

clean hands or a clean apron signal a bad approach.

never coming down or never going hungry leads to unrequited ability.

understanding of ingredients should be as intimate as possible, but keeping in mind that complete understanding of each is not always possible nor even preferrable. ingredient use is about mastery with and without what is often understood or defined as "control".

errors are necessary, and even the occasional bout of vomiting and diarrhea unavoidable, if not exactly recommended.

every bad taste, delirium, and/or nightmare must be vividly recallable.

nourishment arrives after the intoxication of the feast has waned, as digestion begins.

the process is cyclicle, effects cumulative.

tolerance and aging lend to the need for developing astute lucid memory, which will help avoid a self-defeating learned dependency that comes from too-frequent efforts to re-create experiences, which can breed a sort of laziness, at the expense of authenticity in newly generated ones.

"Capitolo Medioevo"

site-specific re-creation of the installation "La Malattia Rossa"

In the process of making and re-making this work, I've come to understand that it is at least in part about the intrinsic flaws of two seemingly opposite extremes, both of which are portrayed here by the same shared symbol, being overcome by an intrinsic flaw of the middle: An inertia of sorts, that augments susceptability, and perhaps even perpetuates atrophy. While it appears to me that the extremes seem to allow for, if not actually provoke, the opportunity for antibody production. All of which leads me to suspect that my next set of images (i.e. interrogations) will center around distinguishing this seemingly static cycle from the real mutations, though I may likely prefer to focus on the progressive as opposed to the regressive ones, which I'm sensing will be somewhere in this direction:
